The teams played once already this season with the Alabama Crimson Tide crushing the Georgia Bulldogs, 41-24, last month in the SEC championship. The two will give it another go on Monday this time for college football’s national championship. If Georgia does prevail in this one will the teams share the title since they would have split the season series?
It’s a fair question though I doubt folks on the UGA side will agree. Bama pulled off the upset in the SEC final as a 6-point dog and is catching 3-points on the college football betting line. If the line holds it’ll be just the third time since 2009 that Bama played as a dog with all three games against UGA. The Tide won the previous two games outright.

Alabama vs Georgia Betting Trends
- Alabama has won seven straight games when facing Georgia.
- Alabama has covered the spread in five of its last six games when facing an AP-ranked Top 15 school.
- The point total has gone OVER in four straight meetings.
- The underdog has covered the spread in four of the last five meetings.
I guess it’s only fitting that the two best teams battle for college football supremacy. And despite the outcome in the SEC title game, the Dawgs are once again favored. They closed as a 6-point favorite last month and were destroyed so oddsmakers toned it down a bit. Georgia surfaced as a 2.5-point favorite and the line has been wagered to UGA -3.
Alabama has been such a dominant force in college football that this could be only the third time since the 2009 season that they’re catching points. The last two occasions were both against Georgia with the Tide earning outright victories. With their win in the SEC championship, the Tide have won the last seven meetings including a thrilling 26-23 overtime game in the 2018 national championship. Bama is 4-2-1 ATS in those games with the OVER going 6-1.
We saw Georgia’s defense get back to form in the semifinal holding Michigan to 91 yards rushing in the 34-11 payout victory. The Dawgs had a nice response to the massacre in the SEC title tilt but still must get over the hex Alabama has on them. No team scored more than 17 points against the Dawgs all season until the Tide dropped 41 on them.
Let’s see, if my match is correct that’s about six times more than their season average, which was 6.9 points allowed entering that game. In their last seven games against Bama Georgia has allowed an average of 36.3 points with the Tide scoring more than 30 points in six of them.
Alabama Crimson Tide
With Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young at the controls, Bama had the seventh-best passing game in the FBS averaging nearly 350 yards. And he had a marvelous outing in the SEC championship throwing for 421 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions.
But showing they have a balanced attack they ran the football 47 times against Cincinnati in the semifinals with Brian Robinson Jr. going for 204 of the Tide’s 301 yards on the ground. Maybe Nick Saban found a flaw in Cincy’s defense or maybe the Tide leaned on the ground game with John Metchie sidelined by a knee injury. Either way they were successful leading to the 27-6 victory.
While both teams have downplayed the fact that the series has been one-sided, it’s still evident. Bama won the previous two meetings by the same 41-24 score and the Tide are 4-0 against former assistant Kirby Smart. And you can expect Bama to give some different looks on Monday since the teams just played last month.
The Bulldogs get another chance to break the spell against Alabama. And hopefully they learned a few things from the SEC title game. You have to play a near perfect game to beat the Tide and the Dawgs didn’t. Stetson Bennett tossed a pair of interceptions, including a pick-six in the fourth quarter that gave Bama an insurmountable 38-17 advantage. And Georgia’s vaunted defense had no answers allowing 536 total yards.
You could say the game was the exception and not the norm since the Dawgs have been so strong all season. Despite giving up 41 points in the SEC final the group still leads the nation allowing an average of just 9.6 points. They were dominant in the semifinal holding Michigan to 91 rushing yards and 328 total yards while forcing three turnovers. As much as you want to believe the defense can slow Bama down, they just haven’t done it. UGA didn’t do it last month and at this point the aura of Alabama has to be in their heads.
Alabama vs Georgia Predictions
I backed the Dawgs in the SEC championship and we see what that got me. While I want them to win since Bama has done it more than anyone and we should get some new blood, I don’t think the Tide are ready to give up their reign. UGA’s defense will be hit with a strong Bama ground game and Young picked them apart last month. Georgia might have more success, but they won’t completely stop the Tide so I’m backing the defending champs to make it two straight.
Prediction: Alabama Crimson Tide +3 and OVER 52
