The Cincinnati Bengals will have a lot of similar faces on the field this season, but there is a new one at the top. Former Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor has taken over for longtime coach Marvin Lewis and is hoping to find more success than expected in 2019.

The oddsmakers do not see the Bengals as a true playoff contender this season and it will be interesting to see if Cincy has what it takes to hit the ground running with the new coaching staff and become a contender in the AFC North. The Bengals are generally viewed as the worst team in the division.

Cincinnati’s win total for 2019 is set at six games, with the “over” listed at -118 and the “under” at -102.
The Bengals went 6-10 a season ago but they dealt with serious injuries to quarterback Andy Dalton and star wide receiver A.J. Green. Dalton, who missed five games last season, could be running out of time as the starter in Cincinnati unless he can have a bounceback season. He threw for 2,566 yards with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2018.
Green missed seven games but is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL when healthy. If Cincinnati is to have any chance of making the postseason, it will need Dalton and Green to remain healthy and play well. If the duo does play all 16 games it seems like the “over” will have a solid chance at hitting. Running back Joe Mixon is another key offensively, as the Bengals do have some intriguing skill players.
The Bengals’ defense is the main concern. Geno Atkins, Carloa Dunlap and William Jackson III lead the way, but Atkins and Dunlap are getting older, and if their play slips, this team could be pretty poor both against the run and the pass. Cincinnati lost Vontaze Burfict to the Raiders in the offseason and the linebacker crew has plenty of questions.
The Bengals’ first-round pick this season was Jonah Williams, an intriguing left tackle prospect from Alabama. Some rookies take longer than others to learn the NFL ropes, but if Williams can be a key player in his first year it would be a big development in getting Dalton protected. The offensive line overall has some weak spots and will need to play better for the team to go “over” six wins.
The Browns, Steelers and Ravens all have playoff potential and the Bengals must play them two times apiece this season as divisional opponents. Cincinnati’s other home games will come against the the 49ers, Cardinals, Jaguars, Jets and Patriots. Their other road games are against the Seahawks, Bills, Rams, Raiders and Dolphins.

The Bengals’ defense isn’t going to be very good but as the NFL goes more pass-happy that isn’t as big of a deal as it used to be in the past. Cincinnati is going to need a big year from Dalton in order to finish above .500 on the season. He is a competent quarterback but not talented enough to lead them to that point. Dalton can play well enough to get this team over seven wins, but the worry here is the injury bug.
If anything happens to him or Green in 2019 it could be an ugly year and kick off a serious rebuild for the Bengals. There are just too many question marks for this team as it could finish with one of the worst records in the NFL.
