It’s one of the best rivalries in baseball and with the backdrop of a division title the matchup between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants takes on more meaning. The clubs enter the three-game series in a dead heat atop the NL West and meet for the final time this regular season on Sunday with Cy Young candidate Walker Buehler scheduled to toe the bump for LA. Winners in 16 of 19 games following a sweep of the NL East leading Braves, the Dodgers finally caught the Giants at the top of the standings. And, fittingly the two best teams in MLB split their first 16 meetings.

First pitch for this NL West confrontation is set for 7:08 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 5, 2021 from Oracle Park in San Francisco. The game will air live on ESPN with betting options for every game on the 2021 MLB schedule available at BookMaker.eu.

Even when one or both of the teams weren’t battling for a division title and playoff spot the games between the clubs were always fierce. It’s been that way since the late 1950s when the teams relocated bringing major league baseball to the West Coast. So I guess there will always be bragging rights when they get together, even if it’s been over a half century since the clubs abandoned New York.

You have to hand it to the Giants for owning the best record in the bigs for the last several months. Not much was expected from them this season but they’ve gotten stellar pitching and lead the majors in home runs. Austin Slater and Thairo Estrada went deep on Thursday helping the Giants snap a four-game losing streak. Slater became the 10th Giant to reach double figures in big flies this season. Even with their recent setbacks the Giants are the most profitable team in the NL up $2676 on the moneyline. Their +142 run differential also has them over $2100 in the black on the runline.

Most expected the Dodgers to be at the top of the division since they have a bunch of talent and just keep adding players. Acquiring Max Scherzer and Trea Turner at the deadline was huge. In fact the Dodgers haven’t lost consecutive games since the deal going 23-6 since the end of July. Despite a number of hurlers on the IL the Dodgers boast the best staff with a league-leading 3.01 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. The starting rotation has produced a MLB-high 66 quality starts.

Probable Pitchers

The Dodgers have had a number of Cy Young Award winners in the past and Walker Buehler (13-2, 2.05 ERA) is in line to be the next. He’s been consistently dominant all season completing at least six innings in all but one of his 27 starts and not allowing more than two earned runs in any of his previous 10 outings. He had another quality start last time out allowing two runs on four hits over 7.0 innings taking a ND in a 3-2 victory over the Braves.

Walker Buehler (13-2, 2.05 ERA)

Over his last 10 starts Buehler is 5-1 with a miniscule 1.33 ERA with the Dodgers 8-2 in those games. He has the lowest ERA of any qualified starter and his 0.91 WHIP is second-best. He’s also dominated the Giants in five previous starts this year going 3-0 with a 0.79 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and .177 OBA over 34 innings. While the Giants lead the bigs in homeruns, Buehler has surrendered just one with Steven Duggar of all people doing the honors.

The Giants hadn’t yet named a starter at the time of this writing. Their rotation got messed up with Johnny Cueto going on the IL with elbow soreness after getting rocked in a loss to the Brewers. Alex Wood was put on the COVID list after testing positive. Reliever Jose Alvarez got the start in the series opener against the Brewers on Monday and the club acquired Jose Quintana for additional depth. More than likely this will be a bullpen game putting more pressure on Friday’s starter Anthony DeSclafani to eat up innings.

If Gabe Kapler goes the route of an opener he should feel good about his chances. The Giants have the best bullpen ERA in baseball. Six relievers combined to pitch 7.1 innings allowing just five hits and one run with eight strikeouts on Monday after Alvarez went the first 1.2 frames.

Dodgers vs San Francisco Giants Predictions

Our Picks: Los Angeles Dodgers / UNDER

I have to admit I’m as surprised as anyone with the Giants this year. I’m not a big fan to begin

with, but it’s hard not to like their scrappiness and aggressive play. And they haven’t caved to the big, bad Dodgers either winning five of the last seven meetings. But going against Buehler isn’t an easy task and the Dodgers righty has been superb shutting down the Giants in his previous outings. On top of that Buehler’s numbers are even better on the road, making the chore of knocking him around nearly impossible.
