Kansas City Chiefs vs Las Vegas Raiders Predictions

The Las Vegas Raiders endured an off week like no other and the events that took place certainly had a role in their upset loss to the Giants last week. Star receiver Henry Ruggs was released following his involvement in a deadly car crash taking a talented football player off the field and perhaps more tragically costing the young man his freedom.

With that incident hanging over their heads the Raiders played an uninspired game losing outright as a 3-point favorite. The team returns home for the Week 10 edition of Sunday Night Football for a crucial matchup with division rival Kansas City Chiefs. Despite their offensive struggles the Chiefs hit the board as a 3-point betting favorite, though the line was wagered down a half-point.

The Week 10 Sunday Night Football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders will take place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, NV at 8:20 p.m. ET on November 14 and will be televised on NBC.

Odds Analysis

The Raiders haven’t been favored in a game with the Chiefs since the 2012 season, catching points in each of the last 16 meetings. KC has been good for a number of years though the gap could be closing. During those previous 16 games only once was the closing line below 3-points, so I guess with the line wagered down to LV +2.5 that’s a win.

The Raiders ended a five-game losing streak in the series with a 40-32 win in KC last season. They also had a late lead in the second contest before Patrick Mahomes tossed a touchdown with 28 seconds remaining for a 35-31 KC victory. The Raiders stayed within the spread in both games. Vegas is 3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS at home this year. KC backers are getting pissed at losing money. The Chiefs beat the Aaron Rodgers-less Packers 13-7 last week but failed to cover the 7.5-point spread, their third straight ATS setback. They have only two payouts this season with both coming on the road.

Kansas City Chiefs

Mahomes set the bar so high in his first few years on the job that it became increasingly harder to live up to. He hasn’t been bad throwing for 2,534 yards and 20 touchdowns while completing over 65 percent of his passes. And the offense ranks among the top-10 in total yards and passing yards per game. But turnovers have been costly thwarting numerous drives forcing the scoring average to plummet. The Chiefs rank 15th averaging 24.6 points.

Mahomes is turning the ball over at an alarming rate. He’s thrown 10 interceptions this season, which is one shy of his combined total from the previous two years. He’s also lost a pair of fumbles to account for 12 of the team’s league-high 19 giveaways. Mahomes has turned the ball over himself more times than 21 teams. For the first time in seven games Mahomes didn’t throw a pick and Chiefs didn’t commit a turnover. They still struggled to score beating Packers 13-7.

Only time will tell if the Chiefs have turned a corner on defense. They were gutted through the first seven games allowing more than 350 yards six times. They held the Giants to 300 and Green Bay to 301, though they didn’t have to face the reigning MVP last week. They also allowed just 24 points total in those games after giving up an average of 29 points over the first seven contests.

Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders must first heal before they can move on. The events during their off week had to weigh heavily in their game against the Giants. And I don’t see things changing much this week with the first game in Vegas since the tragic crash involving Ruggs. The team released the 2020 first-round pick but that doesn’t make what happened go away. And the loss of the speedster on the football field will impact the passing game.

The club had a lackluster outing against the Giants with Derek Carr turning the ball over three times. I guess you could say he pulled a Mahomes. And Carr said it was miscues causing them to lose a winnable game and not emotions. The Raiders own a share of the AFC West lead at 5-3, but their body of work so far is questionable. Their last two losses were to a pair of 3-6 teams in the Giants and Bears. And they needed overtime to beat Miami.

The games will be played, but the organization has dealt with more over the past few weeks than most teams deal with in years. The resignation of Jon Gruden over some controversial emails got things started. Ruggs added to the misery and another 2020 first-round pick Damon Arnette was recently let go after a video surfaced of him making death threats. That’s a lot to deal with when you still have to prepare for the defending two-time AFC champions.

Prediction: Kansas City Chiefs -2.5 and OVER 52

KC Chiefs vs Raiders Prediction

The Chiefs got some help from the defense that last two weeks giving the group a level of confidence they probably haven’t had all season. And if Mahomes was trying to do too much to make up for the sagging unit, he can stop. And if he has a decent game the Chiefs get a win with the Raiders dealing with off field issues.
