New York Jets vs Indianapolis Colts Predictions

Just when you think you have the NFL figured out along comes a game like the New York Jets had last week. Playing without their starting quarterback and getting 11.5-points on the closing line, the J-E-T-S upset Cincinnati 34-31 coming from 11 points down in the fourth quarter.

It was quite the surprise considering Gang Green has one of the most inept offenses in the league and was massacred last week in New England. We’ll see if there’s any carryover when the Jets take on the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday Night Football to get the Week 9 betting schedule underway.

The Week 9 Thursday Night Football game between the New York Jets and Indianapolis Colts will take place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN at 8:20 p.m. ET on November 4 and will be televised on FOX and NFL Network.

Odds Analysis

New York’s victory didn’t do much to sway oddsmakers, who positioned the Jets as a 10.5-point underdog on the opening line for Thursday’s contest. If the line holds it’ll be the second straight and third time overall they’ve been spotted double digits. In fact the Jets have closed as an underdog of at least 3-points in every game.

They were just 1-5 ATS until last week’s outright victory. Both wins and covers came against two of the top teams in the AFC in Tennessee in Week 3 and Cincinnati. Indy saw its 2-game SU and 4-game ATS winning streaks end with an OT loss to Tennessee, falling further behind in the AFC South. At 3-5 this is almost a must-win game for the Colts to keep any hopes of a playoff spot.

New York Jets

What would otherwise be a boring Thursday night matchup between two losing teams got a little more interesting after Mike White’s display against the Bengals. Everybody likes a good story and this is a doozy so a primetime broadcast is the best outlet. A fifth-round pick of the Cowboys in 2018, White has been cut five times and hadn’t thrown an NFL pass until last week. In the span of about three hours he became a Jets folk hero.

Could there be a quarterback controversy in New York? I don’t think the Jets are going to give up on top draft pick Zach Wilson, but if White has another strong game on Thursday, who knows? Wilson will not be ready to play against the Colts as he recovers from a knee injury leaving White at the controls. And what will the guy do for an encore? White pulled off the improbable win for the Jets going 37 of 45 for 405 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those scoring passes came in the final five minutes as the Jets overcame an 11-point deficit to get the 34-31 win.

The Jets flashed enough defense to help in the victory. Shaq Lawson snared the team’s first interception of the season, which turned into the game-winning touchdown a few plays later. They also recorded three sacks after getting just one in the previous two games combined. After scoring 20 points in the first three games, the Jets have at least that many in three of the last four helping the OVER go 4-0 in those games.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts blew a golden opportunity to make it a race in the AFC South, falling to the Titans on Sunday for the second time this season. They had been on a nice little run winning two straight and three of four with payouts in each game. However Carson Wentz reverted to the form that got him exiled from Philadelphia with a pair of costly interceptions. Turnovers hadn’t been a problem with just one pick entering Sunday’s game. But a pick-six late in the fourth put the Colts in a hole and another in overtime led to the game-winning field goal.

This game feels like a must-win for the Colts. They were primed for a strong season with a defense that played well last season and the reemergence of Wentz. Indy was looking to build off its playoff berth from last season. A slow start hurt and they can’t afford to lose a game that has them favored by double digits. And I don’t think they’re going to be surprised by the Jets quarterback like Cincinnati was on Sunday.

The teams met last season with Indy covering the 11.5-point closing spread in a 36-7 triumph. The Colts averaged 37 points in the last three meetings going OVER the total twice. New York’s defense hasn’t improved much so I expect Wentz and Jonathan Taylor to have big games, and playing at home on a short week will help.

Prediction: Indianapolis Colts -10.5 and OVER 46.5

Jets vs Colts Predictions

It’ll be interesting to see what White does a second time around. Indy has game film to watch and I doubt the guy goes off like he did on Sunday with the element of surprise no longer there. And despite their record, the Colts are a good team that will be hungry leading to a victory.

Prediction: Indianapolis Colts -10.5 and OVER 46.5
