The New York Yankees look to continue their winning ways when they take on the Texas Rangers in the second of a four-game set on Tuesday in Arlington. Despite Sunday’s loss to the Orioles that prevented New York from sweeping the series, the Yankees posted wins in 11 of 15 games to climb the ladder in the AL East. They enter the week just two games off the division pace rebounding from a poor 6-11 start. The Rangers’ losing streak reached six after Sunday’s loss to the Astros dropping them into the AL West basement.
The contest between AL teams takes place on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at 8 p.m. ET from Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX. The game will air live on ESPN.

Starting the season at 6-11 was just a minor bump in the road for the AL favorites. The Yankees have turned things around going 16-7 since with wins in nine of 14 road contests. The Yankees haven’t lost a road series in that span going 3-0-1 and look to finish off their current road trip on a high note. The Yankees opened the trip taking two of three in Tampa and Baltimore. We saw the offense break out against the Orioles scoring 19 runs in three games. That came after plating a total of five runs in the Tampa series.
The Yankees rank in the bottom third in team batting average and runs scored per game leading to the UNDER going 22-17-1. And the offense will be challenged going forward with Giancarlo Stanton placed on the IL. Stanton is one of the bright spots for the Yankees hitting .282 with nine home runs and 24 RBIs in 33 games. Pitching keyed the team’s resurgence and it will have to continue as the offense works out the issues. The Yanks have the sixth best team ERA and lead MLB with a 1.09 WHIP.
A stretch of seven wins in nine games vaulted the Rangers to .500 on May 9, the second time they reached the breakeven point since the season started. Apparently they just couldn’t handle the prosperity. They enter this series riding a six-game losing streak where everything has gone wrong. They scored just 17 runs in the skid and were limited to three runs or less four times while boasting a .203 team batting average. Their work at home has been much better, though. The Rangers are 6-3 in their previous nine home games averaging 5.6 runs per contest with the OVER at 4-1 in their last five home outings.
While the staff has kept the Yankees going this season they haven’t received much help from Jameson Taillon (1-3, 5.40 ERA), who gets the nod on Tuesday. The righty was touched for four runs and six hits over 4.2 innings by the Rays in his last start taking the loss in a 9-1 decision. A few positive outings kept him in the rotation. Two starts ago Taillon surrendered three hits and a run with eight strikeouts over 5.0 innings to beat the Tigers, his only win of the season so far.
The long ball has plagued Taillon this season. He’s allowed at least one home run in six of his seven starts and has yielded six in 16.0 innings of his last three outings. This will be his second appearance against the Rangers after picking up a win while a member of the Pirates back in 2019. Taillon allowed three earned runs over 6.1 frames in that outing.
The Rangers counter with Mike Foltynewicz (1-3, 4.60 ERA), who is looking to regain his All-Star form from a few seasons ago. While he’s not there just yet, Folty has become a key piece in the rotation. He is 1-0 over his last five starts and the Rangers are 3-2 in those games. Another encouraging sign is the fact that he hasn’t allowed a home run in two of his last four starts. He yielded eight big flies in his first three starts and has been touched for 11 overall. He’s also given up more hits (49) than innings pitched (45.0) this season.
While the overall numbers weren’t great, Foltynewicz and manager Chris Woodward were encouraged after his last two outings. Two starts ago he pitched into the seventh inning giving up four earned runs and six hits. He was touched for eight hits and three runs in 5.0 innings in his last start. “He’s given up runs but it’s been a little bit unlucky. They just happened to hit his mistakes, but overall I thought he was decent,” the manager said.
New York Yankees vs Texas Rangers Prediction
Our picks: New York Yankees -165 / UNDER 9.5
Which way do you go when you have teams struggling to score runs against starting pitchers who have a difficult time getting batters out? The Yankees have picked up the pace since a slow start and they will be even better when the offense starts to click. That could be an issue with Stanton and a few others on the shelf. The total is high so I’m backing the UNDER and the visitors.
