Should You Back the Chiefs in the NFL Betting?
The NFL season started with Kansas City firmly in place as the favorites to clinch Super Bowl success, but it’s fair to say that the season hasn’t panned out as many would have expected.
NFL Week one saw Andy Reid’s side make heavy work of edging past the Cleveland Browns in a tight 33-29 success, but that was followed up by the narrowest of defeats to the Baltimore Ravens (36-35) and another close-run loss, this time when hosting the Los Angeles Chargers (24-30).
It’s certainly not what the pundits had expected of a side led by arguably the NFL’s best quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, and the 1-2 record may make you think twice about backing the Kansas City Chiefs when you consider the best football games to bet on today. The following two games see the Arrowhead side go into battle in potential brutal clashes with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Buffalo Bills.
However, Mahomes doesn’t seem all that perturbed by the rocky start to the campaign, believing that his Chiefs side are capable of responding to the pressure of the poor opening, stating;
“It’s exciting. Now you know you have to go,” Mahomes said. “We’ve put our backs against the wall. So how are we going to respond? I think you’ll get the best out of everybody. You’ll get the best out of every person in this locker room because you know that it’s time to go now. Every game matters if you want to do what we want to do, and I’m excited to see how these guys respond, myself included.”
For comparison, it’s worth noting that the Chiefs only registered their second defeat of the campaign last season, in week 17. This goes to show just how much they have dipped, and that may be down to Kansas being considered as the favorite this time around.
Chiefs Still Have Time
The Chiefs probably don’t need to hit the panic button quite yet; after all, they are averaging over 30 points per game, and there is still plenty of time to address the early slide. Mahomes, who shows great maturity for a player starting his fifth NFL season, certainly feels it’s all about how he and his teammates react to the opening, and that will dictate how far into the postseason they can go.
“It’s how we respond, I’ve said it a lot now, but it’s true,” Mahomes stated. “If you have that championship swagger, you don’t let a loss in September affect your mindset. [It’s about getting] better every single day so that you can put yourself in the best [spot] to make a run at the end of the season.”
Brady vs Mahomes
Kansas City Chiefs still lead the NFL betting, albeit their (+650) odds are now level with last year’s Super Bowl winners Tampa Bay. It’s still very likely that the match-up between Mahomes and Tom Brady will be a significant factor in where the championship ends up.
When comparing the two thus far, Brady leads Mahomes in both yards and TDs, albeit both have posted impressive numbers after the early encounters. Brady leads Mahomes 10-9 in passing touchdowns and 1087 to 940 in terms of passing yards.
