Philadelphia Eagles vs Washington Redskins Predictions

The Washington Football Team has to feel a lot like Lloyd Christmas right now. Their chances of making the playoffs are slim, like one in a million, but like Lloyd said in the film Dumb and Dumber “So, you’re telling me there’s a chance.” The team formerly known as the Redskins didn’t help their case with last week’s catastrophic meltdown in Dallas, but stranger things have happened.

A lot has to work in their favor over the next two weeks, but first they have to win, something they haven’t done in their last three games. The middle defeat in that trifecta was against the Philadelphia Eagles when the team was ravaged by COVID and missing its top two quarterbacks. The Eagles prevailed in that contest and they are positioned as a 4-point favorite on the NFL betting line for the rematch.

Odds Analysis

The line for the second meeting between NFC East rivals is quite different than the first. Two weeks ago the Eagles closed as a 10-point favorite when the Football Team was without several starters due to COVID. Washington signed Garrett Gilbert just days before the game and he started with Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen sequestered. The teams pushed the line in Philly’s 27-17 victory.

The Eagles are getting plenty of love at the betting window for the rematch with action pushing the spread from Philly -2.5 on the opener to -4. The Eagles played their way into a playoff spot by winning three straight and five of their last six games going 4-1-1 ATS over that stretch. They are currently the seventh-seed and while they haven’t clinched they control their own destiny. And there are several teams nipping at their heels should the Eagles falter.

Philadelphia Eagles

Since Jalen Hurts has trouble throwing the football the Eagles just run it. And they are the best in the league doing that. Only five teams average more than 130 yards on the ground, but when the Eagles run for that many it’s a bad day. They rushed for at least 175 yards in seven straight games topping the 200-yard mark five times before being “held” to 130 last week by the Giants.

Still the Eagles dropped 34 points on the G-Men in their cover win. We’ve also seen an uptick in point production with an invigorated ground game. The Eagles scored at least 30 points in five of their last eight games. They are averaging nearly 30 points in that span with the OVER at 6-2.

There are some concerns, though, heading into this contest. First the Eagles won’t get Washington’s JV squad. And second, they’ll need someone to run the football. Hurts has been hobbled by an ankle injury limiting his ability to run. He had only two carries for seven yards last week, both season lows. Leading rusher Miles Sanders is out and Jordan Howard is questionable. If Boston Scott can’t carry the load and the Eagles are forced to throw the football, they could be in trouble.

Washington Football Team

Short memories are a good thing for athletes. With the postseason still in play the Football Team needs to pick up the pieces from one of the worst losses in franchise history. I’m not sure if any team in the NFL has dealt with as much in terms of injuries and COVID than Washington, but Ron Rivera isn’t making excuses. With what seemed like half the roster on the COVID list, the club played an inspired game against the Eagles in Week 15.

A short turnaround didn’t help and neither did the play of Heinicke in Sunday’s 56-14 loss to Dallas. “We’ve been dealing with a lot of shit, so it’s something we’ve got to learn to deal with and handle. Sometimes we play to our abilities and play to what we’re capable of. Sunday was not an indication of what we’re capable of,” Rivera said.

Heinicke had been decent for most of the season since taking over after Ryan Fitzpatrick went down. The team didn’t bring in help instead relying on Heinicke’s development. That went in the tank against the Cowboys with an awful performance. Heinicke threw an interception on the first offensive play and things snowballed. He was just 7 of 22 for 121 yards with two picks while getting sacked four times. He was mercifully yanked in the second half. I’m not sure Washington can play any worse surrendering touchdowns on an interception return and a blocked punt while being outgained 497-257.

Prediction: Washington Football Team +4 and UNDER 46

Eagles vs Redskins Prediction

If the line was a point or two higher I’d be all over Washington in this one. They actually have some time between games and some COVIDs returning will boost the depth. And like I said, the Football Team can’t be worse than it was in Dallas. Philly could have a tough time on offense with the ground game missing key parts. Force Hurts to throw and the D could come up with enough big plays to win outright.

Prediction: Washington Football Team +4 and UNDER 46
