The South Carolina Gamecocks have already matched their season win total from last season. However, moving past that this week will be difficult with a SEC East matchup against the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs on tap. If the Cocks need any motivation they can look back on their last visit to Sanford Stadium when they upset then No. 3 Georgia 20-17 in overtime as a three-touchdown underdog.
You know that’s on the mind of UGA, too, and the Dawgs aren’t going to allow another upset between the hedges. Georgia has won five of the last six meetings and is a 30.5-point favorite to extend their winning streak in the series to two games.
The Week 3 college football game between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Georgia Bulldogs will take place at Sanford Stadium in Athens, GA at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, September 18, 2021 and will be televised on ESPN.

Last week’s game against East Carolina was one the Cocks probably lose in years past. They played as poorly as they could possibly play yet escaped with a 20-17 road win on a last second field goal overcoming a 14-0 deficit to push the spread. They opened the campaign with a 46-0 rout of FCS Eastern Illinois covering the 31.5-point closing line. We’re not quite sure how the Cocks are going to be the rest of the season, but opening the Shane Beamer era with two straight wins is a good start.
Georgia faced stiffer competition in its first two games and came away looking every bit like a team that can contend with Alabama atop the national rankings. There’s a good chance we see those clubs battle for the SEC title in December. The Dawgs aren’t putting the cart before the horses, though, and they showed no letdown from the season-opening win over Clemson by throttling UAB 56-7 last week. UGA is 2-0 SU and ATS and has allowed a total of 10 points in the two games. Dating back to the mid-1990s the Dawgs have been a favorite of 30 or more points 27 times winning every game outright while going 8-19 ATS.
South Carolina Gamecocks
Playing against G5 East Carolina, the offense sputtered with three turnovers and two punts on their first five possessions. The group managed just one touchdown on a pass from Zeb Noland. And the quarterback position remains an issue heading into this week. Noland was originally a grad assistant on Beamer’s staff before injuries forced the former Iowa State and North Dakota State signal-caller to don the pads. There’s a chance Luke Doty returns to face Georgia. He returned to practice this week after being sidelined with a foot injury. Either way, the offense has to avoid mistakes and move the football to entertain any thoughts of a possible upset.
The Cocks have been solid defensively even the competition hasn’t been. They yielded 109 total yards and nine first downs in the shutout of EIU, the Cocks first blanking in over a decade. The group kept them in the ECU game allowing just 193 yards after the Pirates connected on a 75-yard scoring pass on the first offensive play. The play of the D might be enough to stay within the spread as long as the offense values the football and the penalties are reduced.
The Bulldogs have lost one game to unranked opponent since the 2017 season and that was to South Carolina in 2019. If you think Kirby Smart and the players who were around back then don’t remember, think again. It was a big deal with the Dawgs positioned as a three-touchdown favorite and it likely cost them a spot in the CFP. In fact that’s Georgia’s only home setback in their last 23 games at Sanford Stadium. The Dawgs have some concerns of their own at quarterback with J.T. Daniels nursing an injury. It didn’t matter last week with Stetson Bennett lighting up UAB for 288 passing yards with half of his 10 completions going for a touchdown.
After allowing only a field goal in their season-opening win over Clemson, the Georgia defense pitched a shutout last week. UAB did score a touchdown late in the fourth on a pick-six. The Dawgs were stifling allowing only 174 total yards to the defending C-USA champs while intercepting three passes. This might be the best team in every aspect that Smart has had during his tenure and the QB rotation exemplifies that.
South Carolina vs Georgia Prediction
Our predictions: South Carolina Gamecocks +30.5 and UNDER 49.5
I don’t think Georgia will lack motivation in this one. They thumped the Cocks last season, but this is the revenge game from that 2019 spectacle. South Carolina will finish with a decent record, but they aren’t good enough to pull off the upset on the road this year. The spread is up there, though, and South Carolina’s defense is good enough keep the score within the spread.
