I’m trying to figure out if it’s a good thing or a bad thing that the New York Giants have another game to play. They get one last chance to wash away the stench of last week’s humiliating loss to the Bears when the G-Men host the Washington Football Team on Sunday.
But they’ve been one of the worst teams in the NFL having lost five straight games. Just a few weeks ago the team formerly known as the Redskins was in the thick of the playoff hunt. Four losses later they were done. A losing record wasn’t going to win the NFC East this year. Washington is a 6.5-point favorite on the NFL betting line to end its losing streak.

Washington Football Team -6.5 | New York Giants +6.5 [BET NOW]
I guess Washington hasn’t been as bad, which is why the Football Team is positioned as a 6.5-point favorite. The betting public is siding with the visitors moving them from a 4-point favorite on the opening line with plenty of early action. The Giants have lost five in a row, all by double figures, going 0-5 ATS.
Washington’s last four defeats came at the hands of the clubs directly ahead of them in the division standings. The Football Team had a 10-0 lead over Philly last week but couldn’t hold on, falling 20-16 but covering the 6.5-point spread for their first ATS win in five games. Overall they are 6-9-1 ATS. The teams combined for 59 points in the first meeting but the total has been wagered down two points to 38.5, the lowest on the Week 18 board.
Washington Football Team
At least the Football Team has been competitive during its losing streak. Outside of the 56-14 pasting by Dallas a few weeks ago, the club played hard against the Eagles. In both games they scored the first 10 points. They also dropped the first meeting with Dallas 27-20 rallying after a terrible first half to make the final score interesting. The issue has been offense. The former Skins haven’t scored more than 20 points in any of their previous six games and they’ve been limited to 20 points or less 10 times this season.
Taylor Heinicke had a better outing last week completing 27 of 36 for 247 yards. It was his most passing yards in a game since the Week 10 win over Tampa Bay. He bounced back from a horrible outing against Dallas when he was just 7 of 22 for 121 yards. However, the turnover bug continued to plague him. Driving for the potential game-winning score, Heinicke tossed an end zone interception in the final minute. He’s thrown at least one interception in his last five starts and his 15 total picks are tied for the second-most in the NFL. The offensive struggles have led to the UNDER cashing in seven of the team’s last 10 games.
New York Giants
If Daniel Jones was looking for leverage against the Giants I think he has it. With the starting quarterback sidelined for the past two games, the offense has been historically bad. It makes you wonder if that hand injury that put Mike Glennon on the IR is real. Not that the Giants were great with Jones behind center, but they were better than the last two games. Two weeks ago Glennon threw for 93 yards and the Giants 192 yards in a 34-10 loss to the Eagles. It couldn’t get any worse than that, could it? Well, it’s the Giants we’re talking about, a team that’s lost at least 10 games in five consecutive seasons, so yeah, it could get worse. And it did.
For the second straight week the Giants set a season low in yardage. Glennon was 4 of 11 for 24 yards with two picks. He was also sacked four times and fumbled on four occasions losing the ball twice. Factoring in the yardage lost on the four sacks, the Giants finished with -10 yards passing and 151 total yards for the game. Oh, they did manage a field goal in the 29-3 setback. The Giants are next to last in the NFL in total offense averaging fewer than 300 yards and in scoring with just 15.7 points per game. It’s hard to imagine there’s a team worse in both categories. The UNDER is 8-2 in their last 10 games.
Washington Redskins vs New York Giants Prediction
Maybe the Giants will have better luck with Jake Fromm at QB. Fromm is expected to start with Glennon hurt and otherwise awful. At least they have Saquon Barkley, who was the only bright spot last week rushing for over 100 yards.
I don’t know where the points are going to come from, but if the total keeps going down it might be wise to back the OVER. As bad as the teams are on offense they aren’t much better defensively. It’s likely to be a close game and in that case I’ll back the points, but I have no faith in the Giants at this point.
Prediction: New York Giants +6.5 and UNDER 38.5
