2017 MLB Props: No-hitters, Albert Pujols, Triple Crown, and more

We’ve almost made it, baseball fans. The 2017 season kicks off on Sunday, thus beginning seven sweet months of America’s favorite sport.

Even though Major League Baseball has the shortest offseason in pro sports, the “pitchers and catchers report” is the best part of Spring. When that baby gets released, baseball is coming on a near-nightly basis.

As a last primer before the campaign kicks off, BookMaker.eu has come up with some interesting props for the 2017 season that beg to be dissected.

Total No-Hitters Recorded During 2017 MLB Regular Season?

  • Over 1.5 (-160)
  • Under 1.5 (+130)

Each season since 2016, baseball has had at least one no-hitter. In 2010, there were a total of six no-no’s, a mark exceeded by the seven in 2012 (three of which came within a blistering 12-day span).

Max Scherzer replicated the record in 2015, when he threw a perfect game in the regular season, as well as the postseason.

It almost feels like this prop should be a slam dunk for the over. That said, in 2016, there was just one no-hitter, courtesy of the Cubs’ Jake Arrieta. Amazingly, there hasn’t been one since that point. Proceed with caution if you’re betting on the over.

Albert Pujols Date to Record 600th Home Run

  • Before May 21 (-115)
  • After May 21 (-115)

Pujols needs nine dingers to become the ninth player in the history of baseball to join the 600 homer club. He’s clearly going to get there this year if he stays healthy.

Last Seasons’ Averages

In 2016, Pujols had 31 home runs, and he’s had a remarkably consistent rate of long balls per game throughout his career. Also last year, Pujols hit a home run every 4.90 games. That mark was 3.93 the year prior and 5.68 in 2014.

It’s fairly safe to assume that–based on these averages– Pujols will need approximately 45 games to hit his nine home runs.

The Halos’ 45th game of the season comes on May 20. This, of course, makes this a really tough prop to handicap. But do keep in mind that Pujols has 61 home runs over the course of the last three seasons before the All-Star break, and just 38 home runs after it.

What This Means for Bettors

If he continues hitting a home run at a rate of around six percent of his ABs (like he did in the first half of the last three seasons), he would ultimately get his ninth home run of the campaign at some point in the middle of May.

We’re betting on before May 21, though we know that the end result is probably going to be fairly close.

Any Player With 30 Home Runs and 30 Stolen Bases in Regular Season

  • Yes +400
  • No -650

It’s been a while since anyone has gone 30-30 in baseball. Mike Trout and Ryan Braun both did it in 2012, but it hasn’t been done since then. A price of 4 to 1 might be worthwhile for someone to do get it done this year.

Remember that in 2011, Ian Kinsler, Jacoby Ellsbury, Matt Kemp, and Matt Braun all went 30/30, and from 1995 through 2012, there was only one season without a 30-30 man (2010). Stolen bases are down for sure, as there were just 14 men who swiped 30 bags a year ago.

But when you consider the fact that Trout, Paul Goldschmidt, and Jose Altuve were the men who stole 30 bases last year and are clearly capable of 30+ home runs, there’s at least a decent chance that one could get the job done.
